Grand Isle State Park
This One Of The Louisiana State Parks Was Badly Hit By Hurricane Katrina
Grand Isle State Park covers only 140 acres of land on the barrier island of Grand Isle on the coast of Louisiana.
It is the only barrier island in the state that has inhabitants. Despite the small size of the park it is an extremely popular place for beach goers and fishing enthusiasts to visit.
However, in recent years it has suffered badly from some major hurricanes which have struck the area, especially Katrina in 2005.
It is not only hurricanes which have affected the park. It was forced to shut its beach in May 2010 following a huge oil leak from an offshore drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico. It remained closed for a full year while clean up operations took place.
