New York State Parks

There Are Over 150 Wonderful New York State Parks

There are actually 159 state parks in New York as well as numerous historic sites, marine parks, preserves, trails, boat launches and state run golf courses. However, in 2010 there were plans to close 56 of these areas due to budgetary difficulties but some have since been reprieved.

They are all managed by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

New York is a state located in the north eastern part of North America and has a population that numbers close to twenty million people.

This makes it the third most heavily populated of all the states.

Despite this large population there are still many stunning locations in which the New York State Parks are to be found.

Indeed Allegany State Park, the largest of the state parks in New York, is often referred to as a "wilderness playground" and in 2007 it was named as one of the "Amazing Spots" in the whole country.

New York also boasts The Adirondack Park which covers 6.1 million acres of land and is larger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier, Grand Canyon and Olympic National Parks combined!

Allegany State Park

The state is usually called "New York State" to distinguish it from New York City, a place that is home to over eight million people, which is more than forty percent of the state`s population. Naturally a number of the New York State Parks are located in this vast metropolitan area.

Just two examples are Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park in Brooklyn and Gantry Plaza State Park in Queens.

The location of the New York State Parks are characterised by being on a number of water features found in this wonderful state.

To the south-east lies the Atlantic Ocean which has a large number of N.Y.parks on its shore. These include Napeague State Park, Montauk Point State Park and the incredibly popular Jones Beach State Park which receives over six million visitors every year.

To the north east is Lake Champlain which also forms part of the border with the neighboring state of Vermont. Here you can find parks such as Point Au Roche State Park and Cumberland Bay State Park.

Part of the north eastern border of New York runs along the St. Lawrence River and there are a large number of the New York State Parks to be found here. Some of them on islets in the Thousand Islands group. They include Cedar Island State Park, Mary Island State Park and Wellesley Island State Park.

Chimney Bluffs State Park On The Shores Of Lake Ontario

In the east and south-east of the state lie two of the Great Lakes, Erie to the south and Ontario to the north.

Lake Erie State Park and Fair Haven Beach State Park are on Lake Erie while there are numerous N.Y. parks located on the larger Lake Ontario. They include Chimney Bluffs State Park, Golden Hill State Park, Hamlin Beach State Park and Southwick Beach State Park.

There are New York State Parks located on three other major water features in the state. The first of these is the Hudson River and its tributary the Mohawk. This river system runs from north to south roughly down the eastern side of the state.

There are over a dozen state parks in New York which are based around the Hudson River.

They number Bear Mountain State Park, Tallman Mountain State Park, Riverbank State Park and Hudson Highlands State Park.

In the eastern central portion of the state are a series of long lakes known as the Finger Lakes as they stretch out like the fingers on a hand.

Watkins Glen State Park and Seneca Lake State Park are among the N.Y. parks found here.

The final water feature in the state is one that is famous the world over and this is the Niagara River and its wonderful waterfalls.

Watkins Glen State Park

Niagara Falls State Park, created in 1885, is said to be the very first state park to be established in the United States. However, Georgia claim that their Indian Springs State Park dates back to 1825.

Whichever is the oldest, there is no doubt that Niagara Falls S.P. has one of the the best known features in America as its main attraction and makes visiting this one of the New York State Parks a must!
