There should be little doubt about how important HVAC systems – those initials referring to “heating, ventilation, and air conditioning” – remain across vast numbers of buildings around the globe. Such systems are vital for regulating temperature and humidity within a building, thereby helping to ensure the comfort and health of the property’s occupants.

All this should make it unsurprising that the global demand for air conditioners, for example, has seen a steady climb over the past decade or so.

HVAC Systems Are Expensive – So Careful Planning Is Necessary

Amid all the above, it is also true that if a business is looking to install or replace a HVAC system at its premises, this will represent a significant chunk of the organisation’s operating budget.

That, in turn, underscores the importance of getting every detail right when it comes to such aspects as equipment sizing, ensuring compatibility with electrical infrastructure, and achieving the most efficient possible performance.

To achieve all these things, though, it will be crucial to understand the energy conversions that often need to be made in the context of HVAC systems.

What Is the Exact Relevance of Energy Conversions to HVAC Installations?

With there being heating, cooling, and electrical elements in the day-to-day operation of a HVAC system, various units of energy and power inevitably come into play. It will therefore frequently be necessary to convert between these units to ensure accurate system sizing, while minimising energy waste and improving safety.

Some of the key units and conversions include:

    • Watt (W), a unit of power used for the electrical power consumption of such HVAC components as fans and compressors
    • Kilowatt (kW), 1 kW being equivalent to 1,000 kW. This unit of power sees widespread use for larger HVAC systems or total power calculations
    • British Thermal Unit (BTU), a unit of heat energy – specifically, the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 pound of water by 1 degree Fahrenheit (°F)
    • Ton of cooling or ton of refrigeration (TR), which measures cooling capacity. Seeing particular use in North America, it is equivalent to the heat absorbed by melting 1 ton of ice over 24 hours. 1 ton is equivalent to 12,000 BTUs per hour
    • Horsepower (HP), which measures motor power – a relevant unit for compressors and fans. 1 mechanical horsepower is approximately equal to 0.746 kilowatts (kW) and 2,545 BTUs.

How Might You Use Such Units and Conversions in HVAC Planning?

Here are a few examples of probable “real-world” uses for certain units and conversions when you are planning a HVAC system at a particular premises:

    • The Calculation of Cooling/Heating Load

Figuring out the building’s thermal load in BTUs, based on such factors as size, insulation, occupancy, and climate, will then enable you to convert to kW for electrical planning.

Such tools as the BTU to kilowatt-hour calculator on the RS website can be crucial during the planning of HVAC installations, given that while heating and cooling systems are frequently rated in BTUs, energy consumption is typically billed in kWhs.

    • The Estimation of Electrical Load

When it comes to getting the sizes right for cables and breakers, it can be important to know how to convert thermal load (kW) to current (amps).

Again, various kilowatts to amps conversion calculators are available online for this purpose.

    • The Matching of Equipment to Power Supply

The coordination of a HVAC system installation will also necessitate ensuring the HVAC unit’s power requirements align with the electrical capacity of the building.

As a first step, this will need to involve determining the HVAC unit’s electrical load in watts or kilowatts, before comparing it to the electrical capacity of the building’s service panel (in amps).

Get Your HVAC Energy Conversions Right, And You Can Expect to Be Rewarded

While there is a lot of complexity involved in the design and fitting process for a new HVAC system, getting to grips with the relevant energy conversions will greatly help you simplify such elements as selecting a system, ensuring regulatory compliance, and optimising operational efficiency.

As a result of such work, you will be able to better ensure your building receives the benefit of a greener, safer, and higher-performing HVAC system than might have otherwise been the case.
