How to Get a Duplicate Car Key Made Before You Lose the Original

The best time to get a duplicate car key is while you still have a working original. Once every key is lost, the job becomes more difficult, more urgent and usually more expensive.

With an existing key, a locksmith can often identify the blade, transponder and remote functions quickly. Without one, they may need to decode locks, retrieve key data and program from scratch.

According to LocksmithLocal, the Uk’s leading auto locksmiths, a spare key is not just convenience. It is insurance against being stranded, missing work, paying for recovery or waiting for a dealer order. For families and businesses, it also reduces arguments over who has the only key.

What Kind of Duplicate Do You Need?

Not every duplicate is equal. A basic mechanical key may open doors but not start the engine. A transponder key starts the car because the chip is recognised by the immobiliser.

A remote key adds central locking buttons. A smart key works by proximity and may include push-button start. Some keys also have an emergency blade hidden inside the fob.

When asking for a duplicate, be clear about what you need it to do: open the door, start the engine, operate remote locking, work with keyless entry, or act only as an emergency backup. The price and process depend on that choice.

Why a Cheap Blade-Only Copy May Not Be Enough

A blade-only copy can be useful for opening a door if you lock the main key inside, but it may not start the car. For most modern vehicles, the immobiliser needs a programmed chip. If you keep a blade-only copy, label it clearly so no one expects it to drive the vehicle.

For many drivers, the practical spare is a fully programmed key. It costs more upfront, but it protects against the real emergency: losing the only key and being unable to start the car.

    How Duplication Works

With a working key, the locksmith can cut the new blade by copying or by code, then program or clone the chip depending on the vehicle. Remote functions may need pairing.

Smart keys may need diagnostic programming. The finished key should be tested in the door, ignition or start system, and remote locking.

Some keys can be cloned quickly. Others must be added to the vehicle’s immobiliser as a separate authorised key. The locksmith will identify which applies.

    Documents and Proof

Even for a duplicate, a professional should verify that you are entitled to the vehicle. Bring photo ID and vehicle documentation.

For company vehicles, bring authorisation. If the vehicle is leased or hired, check the terms before adding keys. Some fleets have strict key control procedures.

This verification protects you. It also prevents unauthorised duplicates being made by someone who borrowed a key briefly.

Locksmith or Dealership for a Spare?

A mobile auto locksmith is often convenient because they can come to your home or workplace and create the spare on-site if the vehicle is supported.

A dealership can supply original manufacturer keys and may be required for certain restricted models. The dealership route may take longer if keys are ordered in.

If you are not in a rush and want original equipment, ask the dealer. If you want a practical spare quickly and the vehicle is common, ask a locksmith. Compare total cost, not just the key blank.

Should You Buy a Blank Online?

Only if you know exactly what you are buying. Car keys vary by blade profile, chip, frequency, board, button layout and smart key type.

A key that looks right may be incompatible. Some used keys cannot be reprogrammed. Low-quality shells can fail quickly.

If a locksmith supplies the key, they can usually stand behind compatibility and programming. If you supply your own, the locksmith may not guarantee it and may still charge for labour if it fails.

How Many Spares Should You Have?

Most households should have at least two fully working keys. If two drivers regularly use the car, each should have one, with a spare plan for emergencies.

For vans and business vehicles, keep a controlled spare at the office and record who uses it. For cars used by carers, relatives or shift workers, consider whether a third key is worth the cost.

Do not keep the spare inside the vehicle. Do not hide it under the bumper or in a magnetic box. Modern thieves know the obvious hiding places.

What if Your Only Key Is Damaged?

If your only key is cracked, taped, water-damaged or intermittently failing, treat duplication as urgent.

A locksmith may be able to transfer electronics into a new case, cut a new blade or program a fresh key. Waiting until it fails completely turns a planned appointment into a stranded-vehicle problem.

If the key blade is worn, duplicating from it may copy the wear. Cutting to code can produce a cleaner result, depending on the vehicle.

Keyless Cars and Relay Theft Concerns

For smart keys, a spare should be stored securely. Use a signal-blocking pouch or box if appropriate, especially at home. Keep keys away from the front door and windows. A spare smart key is useful, but it must not create an easy target.

If a smart key is lost, ask whether it can be deleted from the car’s memory. Key control is as important as key quantity.

    Cost and Value

A duplicate made while you still have the original is almost always better value than an all-keys-lost replacement.

The vehicle is accessible, the locksmith can identify the key more easily and programming may be simpler. You also avoid recovery, missed appointments and emergency attendance.

Ask for a quote that includes cutting, programming, remote pairing and testing. Make sure you know whether the spare is fully functional or blade-only.

    Practical Checklist Before Booking

    Have ready:

    • Vehicle make, model, year and registration
    • Existing key type: blade, flip key, remote or smart key
    • Whether you want a full spare or emergency blade
    • Photo ID and vehicle documents
    • Location of the vehicle
    • Any known problems with the current key

A clear brief helps the locksmith bring the right blank and equipment.

    The Practical Answer

Get a duplicate before you need it. One fully working spare can save time, money and stress. It is especially important if your current key is the only one, the fob is damaged, multiple drivers use the vehicle or the car is essential for work.
