Sailing vs. Motorboating: Which Suits Your Lifestyle?

If you love being on the water, you may be thinking about buying a boat of your own. Deciding between a sailboat and a motorboat comes down to what type of experience you’re looking for and how you’d like to enjoy the water.

Here are some considerations to weigh so you can hit the open water knowing you’ve found the best boat for your lifestyle.

    Research the Cost

How much money you’re comfortable spending depends on your budget, as well as the amount you want to invest in your boat in the coming years. Sailboats and motorboats are both significant purchases and long-term commitments. A sailboat could be less expensive if it doesn’t have a motor, but it depends on the size and quality of the boat, as well as any amenities. If you’re looking for a sailboat with an engine, commonly known as a motorsailer, you may have to factor in the cost of fuel, just as you would for a motorboat.

Keep in mind that purchasing either type of boat will require ongoing maintenance and care, in addition to paying for docking, insurance, registration, licensing and any additional equipment. If you need help affording a boat or paying for repairs, one option is a boat loan from a bank, credit union or online lender. A boat loan offers fixed terms and predictable monthly payments, which could make it easier to budget.

Think About the Required Knowledge and Skills

Whichever boat you choose, it’s important to take the time to build your knowledge and skills so that you can make the most of your boat and stay safe on the water. A sailboat may require more technical knowledge than a motorboat, including how to rig the boat for an outing, work the sails, navigate the water and read the weather.

If you prefer a shorter learning curve, a motorboat may be a better choice. Of course, it takes time to learn how to safely and effectively operate a motorboat, but they are generally more straightforward and ready to go. There could be something appealing about jumping into your motorboat when the weather is nice, powering it up and driving to your favorite fishing spot for the afternoon.

Consider Your Preferred Amenities and Activities

If you have a need for speed, a motorboat is likely going to be faster than a classic sailboat, which depends on the wind to propel it forward. Similarly, if you enjoy participating in water sports like wakeboarding, tubing or waterskiing, a motorboat will be a better fit for those activities.

If you prefer to boat alone and focus on being in nature, or with a smaller crew that enjoys a hands-on experience, a sailboat could be the right fit. If you live near a boating community, there may be a sailing club you could join to build skills and camaraderie. A motorboat may have more space for friends and family than a comparably sized sailboat. But if you want to take everyone out for the day in your motorboat, remember that you may need to map out fuel stops along the way.

Both types of boats could have amenities that lend themselves to greater comfort and enjoyment, such as built-in speakers for playing music and cushioned seating, with high-end luxury vessels having more of these features.

    Account for the Environmental Impact

If you’re interested in a boat that has a lower environmental impact, a sailboat is your best bet. Motorboats, on the other hand, use a lot of fuel and tend to cause a lot more noise pollution than sailboats, especially if your boat has an older engine. You could also look at pre-owned sailboats and motorboats for a more sustainable option.

Take Your Time Choosing the Right Boat for You

If spending time on the water is one of your favorite hobbies, evaluating the pros and cons of owning a sailboat or a motorboat may take some time. Research the cost of each type of boat, including ongoing maintenance and associated fees. Consider the hours you’ll need to dedicate to improving your knowledge and skills for operating each type of vessel, as well as what kind of amenities and activities you’re looking for. You can even look into the potential environmental impact of each type of boat if that’s important to you.

Carefully weigh your decision so that you’ll be able to enjoy your boat for many years to come.
