    Building a backyard deck is an excellent endeavor if you’re looking to create an outdoor space designed for entertainment and relaxation, whether your vision is to host summer barbecues or simply have your own quiet spot to unwind with your favorite book.

    Plus, it will boost the functionality and value of your home. However, undertaking such a project is only for serious DIYers, as it requires meticulous planning and preparation.

    First things first, you need to learn how to assess the quality of work. There are many elements that go into this process. Design matters. Using the right fasteners (screws and bolts, not nails) is paramount to the quality of the deck. Weatherproof construction needs to be at the top of your mind.

    Moreover, you want to build it for durability and make sure the deck has solid footings to avoid unnecessary repairs. If it feels like it’s a lot to juggle, that’s because it truly is. But don’t panic.

    With the right steps and methods, it’s possible to bring your dream backyard deck to life, and we’re here to guide you through the process. Ready to learn more?

    Understand your needs (and the space)

    Don’t start building the deck until you decide how you’ll use it. Is it meant only for quiet family dinners or for large gatherings? Also, what is the yard size, and what is the best location for the deck? For example, a sunny spot is ideal for lounging, while for dining, a shady area works better.

    Also, take the time to measure the area where you want to build the deck, as this will help you determine the right size and layout. Consider also any features you’d like to include, like a space for grilling, built-in seating, planters, and so on.

    Get permits and approvals

    The next important step is to verify the local building codes and regulations to see if you need a permit for deck construction, as this is the case in many areas, and to ensure your deck meets safety standards.

    You can check the website or office of your local municipality to find out which permits are required, and once you do, collect all the documents you need, including deck plans and measurements. Then submit them to obtain the necessary approvals to help prevent legal issues and ensure your deck is up to code.

    Pick your deck design

    So, you’ve assessed your needs and got the paperwork right. Now, it’s time to think about what kind of design you want for your backyard deck. The good news is that there are plenty of styles to choose from, but, as a rule of thumb, consider how the deck will look with your home.

    While traditional wood decks are an excellent option, you may want to opt for composite materials to ensure durability and low-maintenance. Consider also the deck’s structure and shape, as well as whether you want a multi-level or single-level deck.

    You may also want to incorporate railings, steps, and balustrades to boost its look and functionality. Whatever the design you opt for, make sure to sketch your ideas as it will help visualize the deck more efficiently and get an idea of how the finished project will look.

    Gather your materials

    Now that you have the design in mind as well, it’s time to gather the right  materials, as this is key to building a lasting deck. You’ll need pressure-treated lumber for the frame and support structure, decking boards (you can opt for wood or composite materials depending on your needs and preferences), concrete for support posts and footings, hardware, and deck rails and posts, which are essential for both aesthetics and safety.

    Apart from these materials, it’s important to keep in mind that building a deck requires several must-have tools that will make the construction process as seamless as possible:

    • Level, to ensure the deck is stable and even;
    • Power drill, for drilling holes and driving screws;
    • Tape measure, to make accurate measurements;
    • Woodworking screws ( ideally ones that are designed for strength and durability and will help you get the job done efficiently);
    • A circular saw that allows you to cut wood;
    • Post hole digger for digging foundations;
    • Hammer to nail different components together;
    • Safety gear like goggles, gloves, and hearing protection.

    Begin the construction

    Now, it’s finally time to get to work. You’ll need to start building the deck frame first by laying the foundation, which will help support the entire structure, so you want to make sure it’s level and strong.

    This involves marking the area, digging post holes, pouring concrete footings, and installing post anchors to secure the posts. Once you’ve set the foundation, you need to install the joists and beams by first securing the beams with heavy-duty brackets ( they need to be level).

    Next, install joists, ensuring they are perpendicular to the beams, and use joist hangers to secure them in place. It’s imperative that you complete this step correctly, as it will help stabilize the entire structure and ensure the weight is evenly distributed.

    Another super important part of building the deck is installing the boards and railings properly to ensure the surface is equally attractive and long-lasting. Start at the outside edge when laying boards, working your way inward, and remember to leave a small gap between boards for water drainage.

    We recommend using screws instead of nails when laying decking boards, as they hold more securely, but be sure to choose high-quality screws. For the last part of the job, you’ll need to install deck railings to add style and safety. Start by measuring where you want the railing posts to go, then cut them properly.

    Attach the posts to the deck frame, then attach the top and bottom rails to the posts, making sure they are level. Finish by evenly adding balusters between the rails to ensure safety.

    Add finishing touches

    To give your deck a more polished look, add some finishing touches. For example, consider smoothing the rough edges of the decking boards and railings, and use a sealant that protects against weather damage.

    And of course, don’t overlook decorative elements! Think about the mood you want to create and choose accordingly. For example, if you want to add a touch of romance, you can use outdoor lighting such as lanterns, string lights, or built-in lighting to enhance the space’s cozy atmosphere while also providing visibility for safety at night.

    If you want, you can create the coziness of your living room in your deck space as well by choosing indoor-inspired furniture and layering on the textiles, like throw blankets and throw pillows. You could even add a fireplace that acts as the centerpiece of your deck seating area – it’s really up to you how you want to decorate it.

    The bottom line

    Building a backyard deck can be genuinely rewarding, enhancing your outdoor living space and increasing the value of your home, but it’s essential to approach the project with care and not overlook any of the steps we’ve explored above. With proper planning and execution, you can create a backyard deck that’s beautiful, functional, and fully tailored to your needs.
