How to Choose the Right Tiles for My Space

Are you adding tiles to your home and aren’t sure how to choose the right ones? You aren’t alone! Finding the perfect tiles for your space can be challenging, especially if you have never bought them before, but that doesn’t mean you need to spend weeks stressing.

Our brief guide walks you through our top tips for choosing the right tiles for your space, including considering your room size and tile layouts.

    Consider Your Room Size

First and perhaps the most important, you need to consider your room size. Your room size helps you determine how many tiles you need and also the right style and size of tile for your space. Ensuring you know how many tiles you need is essential to avoid ordering too many or too little tiles, which can delay your work.

Use the size of your room to consider what size tiles will work best. Typically, larger tiles will work best in large rooms, where their minimal grout lines help to achieve a spacious feel and a seamless look. Smaller rooms or smaller tiled areas will work well with smaller tiles, and you can save time on installation, as you won’t need to cut larger tiles to fit the space.

You can also add patterned tiles in smaller areas, like above a sink or as a kitchen splashback. In these spaces, patterned tiles can pop and become a feature of your room. In these smaller areas, differently shaped tiles can work well too, with hexagonal tiles working well as kitchen splashbacks.

    Consider Your Tile Layout

The tile layout needs to be considered when choosing your tiles. The layout of your tiles can help to transform the space with minimal effort. For example, laying tiles diagonally can make the floor space seem larger. Y

ou can also lay rectangular tiles with a long edge across a shorter room to make it seem narrower and longer. By considering the layout, you can easily make a small space feel larger and lighter.

Wall tiles can also be laid vertically instead of horizontally to make the space feel taller. Doing so can reduce how many tiles need to be cut, saving time and preventing tiles from being wasted or snapped when you are cutting them. When looking at the layout of your tiles, consider their grout lines too and how they will impact the design.

    Consider Grout Lines

Grout lines are an important feature to consider too. Smaller tiles will require more grout lines, and these can be noticeable. They can add extra detail to your space, especially if you choose a contrasting colour to your tiles.

You need to take care when choosing the colour of your grout with smaller tiles though, as it can make the area look busier than it is. Larger tiles will typically have fewer grout lines, creating a simple and clean look.

The colour of your grout must be considered regardless of the size of your tiles. You can opt for a colour that blends in with your tile colour, or one that stands out to male iot a focal point. When deciding on the colour of your grout, consider the colour of your tiles to ensure it is the right shade.

We also recommend checking how easy it is to keep the grout clean, especially in showers. You don’t want to spend every afternoon scrubbing white grout to prevent mould from forming in busy showers.

    Consider Any Fixtures and Fittings

When tiling a space, you need to consider any fixtures or fittings that could be in your way. This is more of an issue in bathrooms, where you will need to tile around pipes, toilets, sinks, and taps. You might need to cut many of your tiles into tricky shapes, which can increase the time it takes to tile your room. You will want to consider how cutting your tiles might impact their pattern, too, and whether plain tiles would be better for the space.

When tiling kitchens or other rooms, you also need to consider power outlets, appliances, or cupboards that could be in the way and how you will tile around them.

    Consider Your Tile Colour

Finally, you want to consider the colour of the tile. Your tile’s colour plays a huge role in how your room will feel, so it is important that you consider the colour carefully. Lighter tile colours can brighten the space, especially in rooms where there is little natural light, while darker colours can help to create a cosy or atmospheric feel.

Lighter tiles typically help to create a bright and inviting space when you are tiling an entire room. If you are tiling one small area, then you can experiment with patterned or darker colour tiles, making them the focal point of your room.

You can use different coloured tiles in one space too. Adding large, white tiles to your shower with a row of patterned or darker smaller tiles can create a border that breaks up the space and makes the shower a focal point.
